Between 1953 – 1987, residents of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune bathed and ingested water that was contaminated with dangerous chemicals without knowing it, every day. If you worked in or were stationed at Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River in North Carolina during this time, you and your family may have suffered permanent, medical damage from the toxic water at Camp Lejeune.
Scientific and medical evidence has shown exposure to the contaminants in the water and serious illnesses later in life are linked. This water was apparently contaminated as a result of two different water treatment plants that supplied water to the base and contaminated supply wells. The Tarawa Terrace Water Treatment plant’s water was contaminated by the waste disposal practices at ABC One-Hour Cleaners (a dry cleaning firm) and the Hadnot Point water treatment plant was contaminated with chemicals and mercury. Along with these water treatment plants, supply wells were apparently contaminated by multiple sources including leaking underground storage tanks, industrial area spills, and waste disposal sites.
Unknown at the time, service members and their families living on the base continued to drink the contaminated water for years. Later in life, serious illnesses, birth defects, and deaths arose that were linked back to the contaminated water. These included but are not limited to the following diseases and medical conditions:
- Adult leukemia
- Bladder, kidney, and liver cancer
- Cardiac defects
- Multiple myeloma
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Parkinson’s disease
- Scleroderma
- Miscarriages
- Ovarian, cervical, and breast cancer
